What is band merchandise?
Band merchandise, band merch for short, is official fan apparel and gear from a band or artist: t-shirts, hoodies, patches, caps, posters and accessories carrying the band’s artwork. Official merch is produced under licence from the band or their management, and the artist earns royalties on every item sold.
Merch started as tour sales next to the stage and grew into a fixture of music culture: for many fans, a band shirt is as much a statement as the music itself. The iconic Nirvana smiley shirt or Iron Maiden’s Eddie are now as recognisable as the albums they belong to.
How does band merch licensing work?
Behind every official band shirt sits a licensing agreement: a merch company (the licensee) gets the right to use the band’s artwork and pays royalties on every item sold. That’s why an official shirt costs more than a bootleg: part of the price is direct income for the artist.
With streaming paying artists so little per play, merchandise is one of the most important income streams many bands have besides touring. Buying an official shirt is a direct way to support your favourite band. At Popmerch every item comes from these official licensees. Here’s how to check that yourself.
From tour shirt to collectable
Original band shirts from the ’80s and ’90s are sought-after vintage collectables today: first-print tour shirts from bands like Metallica or Iron Maiden can fetch hundreds of euros on collector markets. The lesson for today: official merch is often printed in runs, and once a design sells out it usually doesn’t come back.
Want your shirt to stay sharp (or be worth something one day)? Wash it inside out at 30 °C and skip the dryer. Read all care tips.
Which type of band merch suits you?
The classic band shirt remains the standard: wearable every day and the clearest statement. For festivals and winter, go for a hoodie or sweater; for subtler fans there are caps, beanies and keychains.
And then there’s the battle jacket: a denim or leather vest covered in sewn-on patches from your favourite bands, a metal and punk tradition that puts your entire music taste on one jacket. Patches are inexpensive, which also makes them an ideal gift.
